MIAMI—A hate crime involving two gay tourists from Los Angeles occurred at the South Beach BK Whopper Bar (1101 Washington Ave). While the incident took place on Monday, March 14 at 3 am, information on the attack only became available recently.
24-year-old Jordon Schaeffer and his boyfriend 25-year-old Eric Danko exchanged a kiss, which led to a verbal altercation with customers at the Burger King outlet, who labeled them “faggots.”
The surveillance video shows Schaeffer being thrown to the ground by a man in a black shirt. As the fight escalated, a customer intervened to stop customers who were trying to end the altercation. While the police are treating the event as a felony battery, those present confirmed that the fight was a hate crime.
According to CBS Local 10, after the perpetrators left the restaurant, Danko followed the attacker and got into a second fight, eventually being arrested for his part in altercation. He admitted to being high on GHB.
The Whooper Bar, a fast-casual version of a regular Burger King is a popular post-bar directly across the street from Twist, the iconic gat bar on 11th Street.
Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
