ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is planning to officiate at a mass same-sex wedding ceremony on Jan. 6 at City Hall, according to the local chamber of commerce for Orlando’s gay community.
While Jan. 6 is the first day a federal judge has ruled that gay and lesbian couples can lawfully get married in Florida, Orange County Clerk Tiffany Moore Russell is still studying the issue, saying that she could not guarantee that marriage licenses would be issued when the day arrives.
According to the Metropolitan Business Association (MBA), Dyer’s event is planned for 9 a.m., and will be open to any same-sex couple with an official marriage license.
“We’re looking for couples who are interested in being a part of this momentous day,” the association said in a weekly electronic newsletter sent out last week.
The MBA is not alone. The GLBT Community Center of Central Florida plans to host a mass same-sex wedding at 6 p.m. on Jan. 6, and ministers at First Unitarian Church of Orlando are offering to marry any same-sex couple for free in back-to-back ceremonies Jan. 10, starting at 1 p.m.
