Nike wants to sponsor the first major out pro gay athlete. But who will step forward and claim the throne? The company wants to be the sponsor of “anyone thinking about becoming the first openly gay athlete in major U.S. team sports.” The comment went directly to Rick Welts, the openly gay president of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, who was then asked to pass the message along. According to Bloomberg.com, Welts said, “They made it clear to me Nike would embrace it. The player who does it, they’re going to be amazed at the additional opportunities that are put on the table, not the ones that are taken off.”
