FORT LAUDERDALE — With all voting precincts reporting, on March 12 LGBT rights activist and attorney Dean Trantalis has won the runoff election for the Fort Lauderdale City Commission District 2 seat against his opponent, Charlotte Rodstrom, by a count of 1,543 to 1,525. The 18-vote margin against Rodstrom does not include provisional ballots, which must still be counted by the Broward County Supervisor of Elections’ office.
Trantalis formerly held the District 2 seat, serving a single term from 2003 to 2006, and was succeeded by Rodstrom, who served two additional terms, the last one after being re-elected in January 2012.
Weeks after her final win, Rodstrom announced that she would run for the Broward County Commission seat being vacated by her term-limited husband, former Broward Mayor John Rodstrom, a move that drew accusations of careerism on her part.
Because of Florida’s resign-to-run law, Rodstrom was required to give up her city commission seat in November, having already lost the county commission race in August.
